There were 50 murders in August this year, six fewer than in August of 2012. There was also a dip in shooting incidents, with 235 incidents this August compared to 282 last year. The numbers show an overall decline in crime compared to 2012, and from Jan. 1 to Aug. 31 there is a 22 percent decrease in shootings, a 23 percent decrease in murders and a 15 percent decrease in overall crime, according to police News Affairs.
Oliver Spann, 27, of the 700 block of North Trumbull Avenue was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Elvis Canfield of 1100 block of North Pulaski Road. Canfield was stabbed several times during an early morning fight on Aug. 28 on the 3900 block of West Division Street, police said.
Sept. 4: Around 9:15 p.m a 33-year-old man was injured in a drive-by shooting, police said. At least one -person inside a white SUV opened fire in the 2200 block of North Keystone Avenue where the victim was struck in the leg and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized. Gang slogans had been shouted just before the shooting from the SUV, which fled westbound after the gunfire, police said.
Aug. 30: A 23-year-old man walked into Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and said he had been shot in the 2700 block of North Western Avenue 6 hours earlier. He had a foot wound and police weren’t able to find a crime scene. He may have shot himself, police said.
Aug. 31: A 19-year-old man was shot in the Pilsen neighborhood in the 1000 block of W. 20th Street around 3:30 a.m. Police said a light-colored SUV drove by and fired shots at the teen, who was struck in the left leg and taken to Stroger Hospital.
Back of the Yards
Aug. 30: Around 1:30 p.m. Rico Lawrence, 43, of the 5100 block of South Winchester Avenue was found shot in the head outside his home. Lawrence was pronounced dead at 1:42 p.m. at the scene. As of press time no one was in custody for the slaying and area Central detectives were still investigating.
Sept. 1: Three people robbed a woman at gunpoint in the Albany Park neighborhood in the 4500 block of North Christiana early that morning. One of the suspects fired a handgun and the woman suffered a graze wound to her neck. Officers opened fire on the suspects after they reportedly pointed a gun at them and later arrested the three suspects, two men and a woman, but the woman was released without charges. The men are charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
Sept. 3: A 20-year-old man was shot in the abdomen around 2 a.m. in the 4700 block of North Central Park Avenue. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
