The Center for Economic Progress and Ladder Up will begin offering free federal and state tax assistance at multiple Chicago locations on Jan. 18.

To qualify for the service, families must have earned less than $50,000 and individuals less than $25,000 during the 2013 calendar year.
Filers will need to bring all W-2 and 1099 forms, Social Security cards or an ITIN number for all household members, a copy of 2012 tax returns, photo identification, their most recent property tax bill, bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit and any amount spent on college expenses.

Many families and individuals in this income range qualify for both federal and state Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC).

Eligible filers must have a valid Social Security number, earned income recorded on either W-2 or 1099 forms, have been a U.S. citizen or resident alien throughout 2013, and have no more than $3,300 in investment income. Children and other household members will generally also need to have Social Security numbers in order to be claimed under the EITC.

Tax preparers at any of the sites listed below will be able to assist with both general tax documents and returns that include the EITC.

Additional information is available from the Center for Economic Progress at 312-252-0280 or at www.economicprogress.org. Ladder Up can be reached at 312-409-1555 or www.goladderup.org. Spanish language assistance is available at 312-409-4318.
