[dropcap]T[/dropcap]The National Latino Education Institute (NLEI) celebrated its 41st Anniversary Dinner and Silent Auction by recognizing three prominent Chicagoans and their contributions to the community. The nonprofit organization is successfully led by Executive Director Elba Aranda-Suh. The event was held on Wednesday, June 19, at the Hilton Chicago.
Aranda-Suh presented Scott Swanson, regional president of PNC Bank of Illinois, with NLEI’s 2013 Executive of Distinction Cuauhtemoc Award. State Sen. Antonio Muñoz and Guadalupe Arce were co-recipients of the Commemorative Founders Award.
Maria Cervantes shared her story of success over adversity as she explained how NLEI helped her obtain her high school equivalency diploma, enroll in an NLEI program and complete a Medical Assistant course. She is now employed at a nutrition clinic.
Silent auction highlights included airline and hotel packages made possible with the support of Southwest Airlines and a weekend-long “test drive” of a Mercedes-Benz. Entertainment was provided by Marimba Ensemble from Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. On-air news personality Ron Magers of Chicago’s very own ABC 7/WLS-TV served as master of ceremonies.
Proceeds from the event will help NLEI to enhance the quality of life for Latinos through educational, vocational and employment services, and through advocacy, thus enabling the achievement of economic independence.
