[dropcap]A[/dropcap]n organization assembled of community volunteers in the Hermosa neighborhood are putting on a first of its kind summer festival in Hermosa over three dates in different public parks, according to the Hermosa Community Network.
“We’re hoping to bring attention to the community,” said organizer Jorge Felix. According to Felix, these summer events will be the first of its kind in Hermosa performed by the community.
The HCN is a community based organization put together by community leaders that meet to talk about the concerns in the neighborhood. Felix said that the Hermosa public services like street cleaning and public safety has not been as strong in recent years. He attributed much of that to the neighborhood being split into several different wards during remapping.
The organization wanted a way to highlight the neighborhood and celebrate its history which led the HCN to file for funding with the Chicago Park District to put on a summer festival with other organizations.
Funding was awarded to put on festivals in Kelvyn Park on June 20, Hermosa Park on July 18 and Greenbaum Park on August 1.
Although specifics on which artists will be showcased is unclear this early in the planning, Felix said that the organization hopes to bring an assortment of talent to the festivals.
According to the HCN’s proposal, the festivals may feature a stage for music and dance, displays by artists and local organizations, children activities and a talent show.
“We want people to have fun and learn about the community,” said Felix.
