“There’s a lot of bold patterns that are popular,” said Jon Kotay, one of the owners of Chicago’s Akira. “This is the year that everyone can do whatever they want.”
Since its opening in 2002, Akira has expanded to multiple locations around Chicagoland and offers a fullline of stylish women and men’s clothing, footwear and accessories.
Kotay also said that since the weather is getting cooler, men should not shy away from expressing themselves with coats, boots and especially scarves. Since this season the rulebook has been tossed out, scarves can be as big as a blanket or twisted up and knotted tight around your neck.
Kotay also said that 2013 is a season of extremes between a preppy or street-wear style. “You can be preppy or wear really urban street-wear. What matters is how you want to express yourself,” he said, “so choose the one that fits your personality.”
Additionally, bold colors from traditional bright green and olive tones to deconstructed print interpretations like brightly colored camouflage, are big trends this season. Kotay added that in both men and women’s fashion this year, leopard print has been very big.
“This year has some really crazy prints and patterns,” said Kotay. “It’s great because they don’t need to match. There is no wrong answer, just express yourself.”
So go nuts with plaid and hats, scarves, socks, ties, bags, coats, and jackets to add to your collection. For those more interested in the preppie look: cuffed denim and brown oxfords are a must have.
