Local Walmart opens doors to first customers

31st Ward Alderman Ray Suarez and Mayor Rahm Emanuel attended the grand opening of the new Belmont Cragin Walmart location on July 17.
The new 116,000 square foot Walmart store located at 4626 W. Diversey is an addition to the blooming businesses in the Chicago Latino neighborhood. The three-month process of opening the store, formerly a Menard’s, was largely taken care of by the 300 new employees and associates this location created.

“Three hundred people filled the spots that over 7,000 applied for. This is an exciting opportunity. Neighborhood by neighborhood we are trying to build a future the kids can see themselves in. Every part of the city is growing,” said Mayor Emanuel.
The ninth Walmart location in the city hopes to bring convenience and build a relationship with its new consumers. Its main goal is to help people save money in order to live a better life.

“Walmart is proud to be an employer in the city of Chicago. We are committed to continue this partnership. Please feel free to contact local store team members with any suggestions you might have,” said Karisa Sprague, Walmart’s Vice President for the Northern Illinois Region.
Hundreds of excited customers were in line as early as 6:30 a.m. to be the first shoppers at the new Walmart, each receiving a reusable blue Walmart bag.

“We recently opened a Planet Fitness. There will be a Chase Bank here soon,” said Alderman Suarez. “This is just the beginning.”
