[dropcap]T[/dropcap]wo men were killed in two separate Humboldt Park shootings recently.
The first shooting happened in the 1300 block of North Springfield Avenue on Friday. The victim, 28-year-old Rolando Leon, was sitting in his vehicle around 7:03 p.m. with his daughter. Two people approached the parked vehicle and opened fire on Rolando Leon, fatally striking him in the head, said Chicago Police News Affairs.
The child was unharmed and the Rolando Leon was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Rolando Leon died of multiple gunshot wounds and the death was ruled a homicide.
Police say the shooting was gang-related and that Rolando Leon was a documented gang member. At press time, no one was in custody and an investigation was ongoing.
“This is senseless. I’m just tired. I want this to end,” said Pastor Ruben Escobar, of Parents for Peace & Justice, at a prayer vigil Tuesday night at the intersection of Springfield and Grand Avenues for Rolando Leon.
“When the people in the community stand up, [gangs] sit down,” he said. “They hide. They run. Because they can fight one person, two people, but they can’t scare a whole neighborhood unless we allow it.”
The victim’s parents denied that their son was an active gang member and said he had moved out of Humboldt Park five years ago to live in Cicero. The victim’s father, 48-year-old Alfredo Leon, said his son had stopped by Melissa’s Food and Liquor to get a snack for his daughter when he was shot.
“No one thought about his daughter, my granddaughter, when they shot him,” said 53-year-old Maria C. Leon, the victim’s mother, at the vigil.
He had come to the neighborhood from his job in Addison, Illinois on Friday to pick up his daughter, who was visiting with her grandparents at their home in the 1200 block of North Springfield Avenue, the family said.
“The cops have surveillance video from the liquor store on the corner and they’re doing nothing with it,” said Maria C. Leon. “They’re treating us like idiots because they think we don’t have any education. That we’re all criminals.”
The other shooting happened Monday in the 700 block of North Kedzie Avenue, near the Richard M. Daley-West Humboldt Chicago Public Library branch. A 23-year-old man and another person were exiting a parked vehicle around 2:40 p.m. when they were approached by a group of people who began shooting at them, said police.
The 23-year-old was struck in the side and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The person exiting the vehicle with the victim was not hurt. After the shooting, the attackers ran southbound on Kedzie, police said.
At press time, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office could not immediately confirm the fatality. Police said the investigation is ongoing and as of Tuesday afternoon no one was in custody.
