Back to School Fair for children in foster care

Back2School11x17-Page-006As the summer wanes school bells are soon to ring, UCP Seguin of Greater Chicago is taking steps to prepare foster children with disabilities and other special needs, by conducting its 16th Annual Back to School Fair on August 9 at the Carr Center in Cicero. Comcast NBC Universal has joined forces with UCP Seguin as a major sponsor, providing much-needed funds for school supplies not readily available for these foster children.

UCP Seguin serves nearly 200 children annually in more than 100 foster homes scattered throughout the greater Chicago area. Many of these children also attend elementary and secondary schools. They look forward to entering their classrooms fully prepared to meet their daily academic challenges.  For that reason UCP Seguin has annually solicited help from individuals and businesses to underwrite costs of these school supplies, or make direct donations of items. The Back to School Fair serves as a fun event at which to distribute these supplies, bringing the foster children, their caregivers, staff, and community volunteers together to celebrate the new school year in style.

Comcast NBC Universal has long supported UCP Seguin and its innovative programs. Along with Comcast, several other area companies and individuals have made donations to this year’s Back to School Fair. As a result of these generous donors, every school age foster child will receive a new backpack filled with supplies.  In addition, the day will include a picnic, a games van, and other exciting activities for the children.

To help kick off the back-to-school season, Comcast is offering all qualifying families six months of complimentary internet service to those families who apply to their Internet Essentials plan between August 4 and September 20th.  Comcast touts this as a low cost internet service that can help students and their families more effectively manage homework.  Comcast states that families must be located in the Comcast internet service area; have at least one child eligible for the National School Lunch Program; have not subscribed to Comcast internet service for 90 days; and do not owe an outstanding balance to Comcast.
