Celeste Silva, 32, from Wicker Park, has embarked on a difficult journey of transformation, which requires dedication, sacrifice, hard work and discipline. The result – a healthy body, healthy lifestyle and a step closer to her dream of being a mom.
Silva joined Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping in Lincoln Park in 2014 and after the intense 10-week program she not only lost 22 pounds and 28 inches on her waist, she won $1,000 from Farrell’s fitness challenge because of her amazing transformation. Her goal is to have a baby in a year, once she gets in perfect shape.
EXTRA: When did you start your journey and why did you join Farrell?
Celeste Silva: I started my journey on minute one of 2014. It was my New Year’s resolution. I thought to myself, ‘my sister is getting married in September and I am going to be a bridesmaid.’ I am childless. Doctors called me morbidly obese. I knew it was time for a change. Around February, I signed up for a gym membership but it wasn’t taking me where I wanted to go. For quite some time I had been going to an allergist and every week I went for my shot I kept passing Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping. I began my FXB just in time for the spring session in March.
How long have you struggled with your weight? Have you tried other weight loss methods before you joined Farrell?
I have always struggled with my weight. As a little girl, I remember how difficult it was for my mom to find the right clothes for me. I was always made fun of in school and picked on. I started being more aware of my body image my senior year of high school and this is when I tried my first official weight loss method. It was the beginning of 2001, I decided to give Herbalife a try. Six months later, I had lost a significant amount of weight, but my stomach always hurt so I decided to stop taking the product. Months later, I was back where I had started. I decided to try another diet with magnetic acupuncture on the ears. I was allowed to eat fried foods and then cut them off completely; it was just way too complicated and eventually I just fell off track.
What was your motivation in losing the weight?
It was almost impossible for me to drive because of how tight my coat sleeves were on my arms. I couldn’t bend down anymore. I was always out of breath, my asthma was worsening, and my breathing was getting thicker by the day; it was too difficult to go up one flight of stairs. I went for a physical in the beginning of the year and I was informed I [was] as healthy as could be, except that I was in the morbidly obese category when it came to weight range. How do I expect to take care of a baby if I don’t take care of myself first?
How difficult was it for you in the beginning? How did you manage to keep perfect attendance in the program?
It was very difficult for me in the beginning. I couldn’t even do one sit up or push-up. I was tired of being fat and deep down I knew I could change my life if I wanted to. All I had to do was show up to class for 45 minutes of my entire 17-hour day. Once I put it that way it didn’t seem like much was being asked of me because I really wanted this to happen. I was ready to transform my body.
What was your nutrition meal plan like?
My nutrition meal plan consists of planning ahead. I eat three main meals daily and three mini snacks. I cook ahead. I also limit my dairy and red meat consumption. I cut out eating out at restaurants completely, and even going to the movies to avoid the popcorn. Also, no liquor whatsoever.
How has your life changed since you joined and lost the weight?
I have more energy, my clothes fit better, I can bend without hesitation now, and my asthma is going away. I have a more positive attitude about myself. It is very hard to maintain the lifestyle but I have been receiving so much support which reminds me every day that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and not to give up.
What are you planning to do with the $1,000 you won?
I plan on investing the money that I won on my health. I signed up for a whole year to continue at Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping.
