Rage Against The Machine: Killing In The Name

So Paul Ryan is a Rage Against the Machine fan. The same Paul Ryan who was picked to be Mitt Romney’s running mate for the Republican Party.

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello got wind of Ryan’s admiration of the group.  Morello was not pleased to say the least.  Morello wrote a response by blasting Ryan for not understanding the message behind Rage’s music.

I am familiar with Rage Against the Machine’s music and their political beliefs. I am not sure how Ryan became of fan of them. Ryan’s voting record is on the opposite side of the spectrum. He voted to extend the Patriot Act, voted against troop withdrawal in the Middle East, and voted for the National Defense Authorization Act.

I think that Morello said it best on how Rage’s music can affect people in different ways. “Some tune out what the band stands for and concentrate on the moshing and throwing elbows in the pit,” Morello said. “For others, Rage has changed their minds and their lives. Many activists around the world, including organizers of the global occupy movement, were radicalized by Rage Against the Machine and work tirelessly for a more humane and just planet.”

I am not sure how I feel about that.

What if one of my favorite musicians knew my political beliefs and blasted me for them?

Shouldn’t that have anything to do with being a fan of someone’s music?

I guess it does.
