This fall, one of Chicago’s most artistic and culturally vibrant neighborhoods, Pilsen, will be gathering as a community to celebrate and host the eleventh edition of one of the city’s largest independently-produced open studios.
The 11th annual edition of 18th Street Pilsen Open Studios, one of the premier events of the citywide Chicago Artist Month, will take place the weekend of Oct. 19-20 in various locations along Pilsen’s 18th Street Corridor.
Extending from Western Avenue to Halsted (16th Street to 24th Street), the event will largely feature the studios and work of artists residing in the Pilsen area, as well as other local, national and international artists invited to exhibit at select galleries. Last year, over 4,000 people descended onto Pilsen to enjoy a celebration of art, culture and community. This year, over 50 artists will be showcasing their work in more than 30 studios, alternative spaces, galleries and cafes.
There are special events to commemorate the 11th edition. They include:
A student showcase of youth art – at Pilsen-based CPS schools in the lobby of the Center for Performing Arts at Benito Juarez Community Academy (1450 W. Cermak Rd) on Oct. 18 from 4-6 p.m.
Mural Walks – Artist and long time Pilsen resident, Jose Guerrero, will be leading this informational and historical tour showing different murals that have been created in Pilsen in the last 30 years. Cost $10; departs from Colibri Studio/Gallery.
Guided Studios Van Tours – Special guided tours to different studios in the area guided by artists or community members. Both days at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Cost $10.
18th Street Pilsen Open Studios will take place Oct. 20 from noon to 8 p.m, and Oct. 21 from noon to 6 p.m. Over 50 artists are expected to participate.
All artists involved in the event either work or live in the neighborhood, or have a strong historical connection to Pilsen. A limited number of cultural spaces /cafes in Pilsen also participate in this event to show work from Pilsen-connected artists who don’t have a studio in the neighborhood.
Pilsen Open Studios is part of Chicago Artists Month 2013, the seventeenth annual celebration of Chicago’s vibrant visual art community presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture.
